DIY Home Improvement: 5 Tasks You Can Do Yourself to Save Money

Home remodeling and maintenance can quickly add up in costs. Fortunately, there are several tasks that homeowners can tackle without hiring a professional, allowing you to save money while enhancing your living space. Here are five DIY tasks that are both manageable and rewarding.

Task 1: Painting Walls and Ceilings

One of the most impactful ways to refresh your home is with a fresh coat of paint. Painting walls and ceilings can dramatically change the look and feel of a room, and it’s a project most homeowners can handle. When our clients want to save money, often times I tell them they can opt to paint their home themselves. BUT…keep in mind: the beauty of paying a painter is that they do this every single day. They move quickly, and because its their job, they can spend 8 hours a day doing it. You may have to paint in your spare time only- meaning a simple project may be spread out over several weeks in the evening or on your weekends.

Tips for Success:

- Preparation: Start by cleaning the walls and filling any holes or cracks. If you dont have a steady hand (That’s a huge difference between pro’s and DIY folks") use painter’s tape for clean lines.

- Choose Quality Paint: Invest in high-quality paint and tools. This can make the job easier and yield better results.

- Technique: Use rollers for large areas and brushes for corners and edges. Take your time for a professional finish.

-Choose quality paint brushes and rollers. They carry more paint, meaning you can paint larger stretches without reapplying paint to the brush or roller. Quality brushes and rollers last YEARS if washed thoroughly and stored where they will not be crushed or bent.

-COVER EVERYTHING. I mean it! You’d be surprised where paint drops end up. So cover furniture and personal items with lightweight painters plastic and use tarps, paper or plastic to cover floors.

Pro tip: tape the edges and seams of floor covering. They can be a trip hazard if not taped down. That gallon of paint in your hand may end up splattering on the ceiling if you take a tumble- not to mention you may get a bump or scratch!

Task 2: Installing shelving, picture frames, or hanging mirrors

Adding shelves, picture frames, or mirrors to your walls is a great way to maximize space, keep your home organized, and add a personal touch to the space! Whether in a closet, garage, or living area, installing those items can be a straightforward project.

Steps to Follow:

- Select the Right Materials: Choose sturdy shelves that fit your style and needs.

- Tools Needed: You’ll typically need a level, drill, screws, wall anchors and brackets. If hanging pictures, artwork or mirrors, you may also need steel wiring!

- Measure Carefully: Measure the space and mark where the brackets will go to ensure even installation. Remember the saying: “measure twice, cut once.” You may end up with extra nail holes in your walls if you didn’t measure properly the first time!

-If you are hanging shelves, a heavy mirror or large paintings- make sure you hit a stud! This is crucial for safety and to protect your precious personal items! A stud finder is a cheap tool you can find on amazon that can help you identify the location of studs behind your walls. Keep in mind- if you have thick plaster walls, you may need to invest in a high quality stud finder that enables deeper scanning. Sometimes they even alert you to the presence of electrical wiring- this is a huge plus to spending a little more on your stud finder!

Hanging photos, mirrors, or simple shelving can be an easy DIY task!

Task 3: Landscaping and Gardening

Enhancing your outdoor space through landscaping and gardening can boost curb appeal and create a welcoming environment. This is a fantastic DIY project that can be done seasonally.

DIY Ideas:

- Plant Flowers and Shrubs: Choose low-maintenance plants that thrive in your climate.

- Mulching: Add mulch to flower beds to suppress weeds and retain moisture.

- Creating a Garden Path: Use stones or pavers to create a pathway, adding both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Gardening can be a refreshing and gratifying experience!

Task 4: Minor Repairs

Small repairs around the house can often be handled without the need for a professional. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent larger problems down the road.

Common Repairs to Consider:

- Leaky Faucets: Most faucet leaks can be fixed by replacing washers or O-rings.

- Drafty Windows: Use weather stripping or caulk to seal gaps and improve energy efficiency.

- Broken Tiles: Replace individual tiles or re-grout for a refreshed look.

Task 5: Installing Light Fixtures

Updating light fixtures can transform the ambiance of a room, and many homeowners can do this safely and effectively.

Installation Tips:

- Safety First: Always turn off the power at the circuit breaker before starting.

- Choose the Right Fixture: Consider the style and size of the fixture in relation to the room.

- Follow Instructions: Most fixtures come with detailed instructions; follow them carefully for a successful installation.

Changing a light fixture can set a whole different mood in your home!

Taking on these DIY tasks not only saves money but also gives you a sense of accomplishment and personal touch in your home. Whether you’re painting, landscaping, or making minor repairs, these projects can enhance both the aesthetics and functionality of your space. Modesty is important though- know your limits, and when something is beyond your comfort level or ability. Sometimes calling a professional may be the best option!
