The 15 Essential Tools Every Homeowner Should Own for DIY Projects
Owning a home comes with its fair share of responsibilities, and being equipped with the right tools can make DIY tasks easier and more efficient. Whether you're hanging shelves, fixing leaks, or tackling small repairs, having the right tools on hand is crucial. Here are the ten basic tools every homeowner should own to handle normal DIY activities around the house.
1. Hammer
I know I know- its an obvious one. But hey, we have to cover our bases here! A basic hammer is indispensable for driving nails, hanging pictures, and assembling furniture. Look for a 16-ounce claw hammer, which is versatile enough for most tasks.
When it’ll come in handy:
- Hanging frames and artwork
- Assembling furniture
- Tackling small repairs
2. Screwdriver Set
A set of screwdrivers (both flat-head and Phillips) is essential for various tasks, from assembling furniture to fixing loose cabinet doors. Consider a magnetic screwdriver set for added convenience.
When it’ll come in handy:
- Tightening screws on furniture
- Installing light fixtures
- Adjusting hardware on doors and cabinets
3. Tape Measure
Accurate measurements are critical for any DIY project. A 25-foot tape measure is a handy tool for measuring spaces, materials, and furniture dimensions.
When it’ll come in handy:
- Measuring wall space for shelves
- Ensuring furniture fits in designated areas
- Planning renovations and layouts
4. Level
A level is essential for ensuring that your projects are straight and even. Whether you're hanging shelves, artwork, or cabinets, a level helps achieve a professional finish. I would recommend owning a 2‘ and a 4’ level!
When it’ll come in handy:
- Hanging pictures and mirrors
- Installing shelves or cabinets
- Aligning furniture
5. Utility Knife
A utility knife is perfect for cutting various materials, including boxes, tape, and even carpet. Look for one with a retractable blade for safety.
When it’ll come in handy:
- Opening packages
- Trimming excess materials
- Cutting rope or string
6. Pliers
A good pair of pliers is useful for gripping, twisting, and cutting wires or fasteners. Needle-nose pliers are especially handy for tight spaces. If you can, buy a kit that comes with various types.
When it’ll come in handy:
- Bending and twisting wires
- Removing nails or staples
- Gripping small objects
7. Adjustable Wrench
An adjustable wrench is essential for plumbing tasks and general repairs. It allows you to grip and turn various sizes of nuts and bolts.
When it’ll come in handy:
- Tightening plumbing fixtures
- Adjusting bicycle parts
- Assembling outdoor furniture
8. Allen (hex) wrench set
Allen wrenches are the sneaky tool that you think you don’t need until you are in the middle of assembling something. Granted, in some cases the product comes with a cheap hex wrench in the assembly kit. But often times they are small, cheap, and strip easily. You’ll find a more comfortable and higher quality set at your local hardware or big box store!
When it’ll come in handy:
- changing plumbing hardware
- Assembling furniture
- Installing bathroom towel bars
9. Stud Finder
A stud finder helps locate wall studs, making it easier to hang heavy items securely. This tool is particularly useful for hanging large mirrors, shelves, or artwork. If you have drywall walls, a cheap stud finder may suffice. However thicker walls like plaster require a deep scanning stud finder. These typically also alert you to the presence of wiring!
When it’ll come in handy:
- Finding studs for secure mounting
- Avoiding electrical wires and plumbing
- Ensuring safe and stable installations
10. Safety Gear
While not a tool in the traditional sense, safety gear like goggles, gloves, and a dust mask are essential for protecting yourself during DIY projects. Do not underestimate the value of these personal protective equipment items (PPE). Your eyes are precious! You wouldn’t want to damage them just because you find wearing safety glasses annoying or cumbersome. Safety glasses have saved me personally from different projectiles and demolition debris. Also, wearing proper masks (I recommend N-95 with a vent) when dealing with mold or any other fine particles protects you from lung damage!
When it’ll come in handy:
- Protecting your eyes from debris while cutting
- Keeping your hands safe from sharp tools
- Minimizing dust exposure during sanding or painting
11. 6ft Ladder
A sturdy 6ft ladder is invaluable for reaching high places, whether you’re changing light bulbs, painting ceilings, or hanging decor. You may even want an 8 or 10 foot ladder. Remember though, there are A-frame ladders and leaning ladders. A-frame ladders should NEVER be used as a leaning ladder. Leaning ladders have extra grip that stops them from slipping out from under you. IF storage space is a concern, consider a telescoping ladder. These are compact when stored. When purchasing a ladder, look for quality- because you are trusting it with your life! So don’t opt for a Temu ladder- buy one with great reviews from a reputable source.
When it’ll come in handy:
- Changing light fixtures
- Reaching high shelves
- Painting walls and ceilings
12. Caulking Gun
A caulking gun is essential for sealing gaps around windows, doors, and bathrooms, improving energy efficiency and preventing water damage.
When it’ll come in handy:
- Sealing windows and doors
- Repairing bathroom fixtures
- Filling gaps in trim and moldings
13. Paint Brushes and Rollers
Having a set of paint brushes and rollers is essential for any painting projects. They come in handy for both interior and exterior work. Remember there are different roller thicknesses and textures for different purposes, as well as different paint brush sizes.
When it’ll come in handy:
- Freshening up walls
- Painting furniture
- Touching up details
14. Shop Vacuum
A shop vacuum is perfect for cleaning up debris from your DIY projects. It can handle both wet and dry messes, making it versatile for various applications.
When it’ll come in handy:
- Cleaning up after renovations
- Sucking up sawdust and debris
- Managing spills
15. Basic Tool Set
A basic combination battery operated tool set from brands like DeWalt or Ryobi provides all the essential tools you need for common tasks. These sets typically include circular saw, reciprocating saw, flash light, impact driver, and a hammer drill along with a large carrying case. These are workhorse kits that can enable you to do anything from making custom shelves to building a shed or even larger projects. If you are dedicated to home improvement projects- definitely pick one of these ktis up. They typically go on sale around Christmas or cyber Monday. In my opinion, i would spend a little extra to purchase the Home Depot brand Ridgid. It’s leaps and bounds better in quaity than Ryobi, but still very affordable. Many professionals actually use this brand- including myself. I own several compressors and large miter saws from this brand!
When it’ll come in handy:
